CHROMA // Deterministic Fluid Architecture
Created by Bob Carilli • Pure Float32 Eulerian Navier-Stokes Engine
Curatorial Statement // Why We Built CHROMA
CHROMA // Deterministic Fluid Architecture is a real-time 60FPS computational fluid dynamics (CFD) interactive digital art exhibit by Medium Click that solves the incompressible Eulerian Navier-Stokes equations across a 256×160 single-precision Float32Array grid with Helmholtz-Hodge pressure projection and 3D specular liquid normal shading in pure browser memory.
Modern web experiences have largely been flattened into static templates and bloated third-party framework wrappers. Without loading a single external WebGL shader library or GPU wrapper, CHROMA packs 3D specular surface normals directly into a 32-bit Uint32Array pixel buffer every 16 milliseconds and encodes every physics parameter into a deterministic, shareable URL state.
Mathematical & Computational Architecture
f_conf = ε (N × ω), ω = ∇ × uNumerical dissipation on coarse Eulerian grids naturally dampens fine rotational eddies. By computing the curl field (∂v/∂x − ∂u/∂y) and injecting a normalized gradient cross-product restorative force, CHROMA sustains razor-sharp, curling vortex filaments indefinitely.
∇²p = ∇ · u*, u = u* − ∇pEvery 16ms frame solves a 14-iteration Jacobi pressure-Poisson relaxation across 40,960 Float32 cells, subtracting the pressure gradient to enforce divergence-free mass conservation (∇ · u = 0) and instantaneous vortex pair rolling.
q(x, t + Δt) = λ · q(x − u(x, t)Δt, t)Both the 2D velocity vector field and 3-channel HDR RGB chroma densities are advected via bilinearly interpolated backward particle trajectories, guaranteeing numerical stability even under extreme cursor shear or radial click shockwaves.
I_spec = max(0, −∇L · d̂) · k_sBypasses slow DOM/Canvas draw calls by packing 32-bit ABGR pixels directly into an offscreen Uint32Array buffer, computing spatial luminance gradients on the fly to cast glossy directional wet-ink highlights over an obsidian slate field.
Four Deterministic Vector Modes
Two opposing high-velocity oscillating jets collide at the viewport origin with secondary harmonic shear injectors, sustaining a rolling central stagnation vortex.
Tri-phase Lissajous orbital attractors weave phase-locked interference ink ribbons across a 2:3 frequency ratio.
Autonomous and cursor-driven momentum splats mirror across four bilateral symmetry axes with complementary chroma counter-injection.
Disables autonomous vector emitters so the Eulerian field responds exclusively to human pointer velocity and radial shockwave clicks.
